Downing Students Honored with Awards for Innovation and Ideas

On Nov. 21, Maurice W. Downing Primary School celebrated student achievement and creativity during its November Portrait of Success and WE CAN awards ceremonies. The November focus – We Can Think of Ideas – aligned perfectly with the district’s Portrait of a Graduate attribute of being Innovative, creating a joyful celebration of students’ imagination, problem-solving and hard work.
Families filled the gym as principal Mr. Erik Walter honored students who exemplified innovation and idea generation. Recipients of the Portrait Award were recognized for demonstrating exceptional teamwork, cooperation and creative thinking. Each honoree received an inflatable torch symbolizing Malverne’s district motto, “Igniting Brilliance.”
In addition, one student from every kindergarten, first and second grade class earned the WE CAN Award for outstanding participation and effort. These students were also presented with a torch to take home as a reminder of their achievement.
The celebrations featured a charming musical performance by the second grade glee club, adding to the spirit of pride and community shared by students, staff and families.
Throughout the school year, Downing students will continue to be recognized for embodying the Portrait of a Graduate competencies, including digital fluency, civic engagement, cultural responsiveness, resilience and ethics.
The district applauds all award winners and commends its teachers and administrators for empowering students to grow as the next generation of leaders, innovators and lifelong learners.
