Downing Students Honored with Portrait of Success and WE CAN Awards

On Oct. 22, parents of Malverne first and second graders gathered at Maurice W. Downing Primary School to celebrate student achievement.
The “Portrait of Success” assembly marked the first of a series of monthly recognitions highlighting Downing students who exemplify the qualities outlined in Malverne’s Portrait of a Graduate – the district’s vision for preparing students for future success.
During the assembly, Principal Mr. Erik Walter honored students with the “Portrait Award” for their collaboration skills and presented them with an inflatable torch representing the district motto, “Igniting Brilliance.” These students were selected by their teachers for demonstrating exceptional teamwork and cooperative skills.
Additionally, one student from each first and second grade class received the “WE CAN” award for outstanding participation, also accompanied by a torch to take home.
Throughout the year, students will continue to be recognized for other Portrait of a Graduate competencies, including digital fluency, civic engagement, cultural responsiveness, resilience, ethics and innovation.
The district applauds all award winners and commends our teachers and administrators for equipping students with the skills to become the next generation of leaders, innovators and lifelong learners.
