Celebrating Students Who Help Others and Engage in Their Communities

January’s Portrait of Success and WE CAN Awards Assembly at Maurice W. Downing recognized students who consistently demonstrate a commitment to helping others and being civically engaged members of their school and community. These students exemplify the values of kindness, responsibility and leadership that are central to our district’s mission.
The assembly began on an inspiring note with first graders performing a heartfelt musical tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., reminding attendees of the importance of service, equality and standing up for others. Throughout the program, honorees were celebrated for the positive impact they make each day — whether through acts of kindness, volunteering or taking initiative to improve their school environment.
This event served as a meaningful reminder that character and civic responsibility are essential components of student success. We are proud to celebrate students who lead by example and help build a caring, inclusive school community.
